Arrest made after pro-Palestine demonstrators stage sit-in at Piccadilly station

Police made one arrest as hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators staged a sit-in protest at Piccadilly station. Hundreds of protesters brought the station to standstill on Saturday afternoon.

Pictures and video from the scene showed the demonstrators on the station's main concourse waving Palestinian flags and chanting. British Transport Police say 400-500 people took part in the protest.

One person was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. On its website National Rail Enquiries said the station was 'closed due to overcrowding' while the protest took place.

There were also similar demonstrations at London's Charing Cross and Glasgow Central stations. The Piccadilly sit-in took place after after thousands of pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered in Manchester for the fourth weekend in a row.

'Free Palestine' protesters met at St Peter's Square at noon before marching through the city centre. It's estimated about 10,000 people took part.

In a statement on Saturday night BTP said: "All protest activity has now ended and stations are working as normal, with no disruption to services. British Transport Police has increased patrols and will continue to work with the rail industry and community partners to ensure that everyone using the rail network feels protected.

"Abuse, intimidation or violence – especially that which is religiously motivated, will never be tolerated and our officers will take robust action against those who seek to cause harm or spread hate."
