Arbroath 1 Airdrie 2: McCabe says more twists to come as Diamonds return to Championship play-off spots

Rhys McCabe reckons there is still plenty of twists and turns to come in the Championship promotion race after his side moved back into the play-off spots with a hard fought win at Arbroath last night.

The Diamonds returned to fourth place as a Callum Fordyce header and Gabby McGill knock-on ensured a happy trip back to Lanarkshire for the Diamonds on a dismal night at Gayfield with a 2-1 win despite a late Jay Bird scare.

It was a confidence boosting result for Airdrie as they targeted a return to winning ways following Friday evening's defeat to Ayr United, Arbroath are now compounded to five straight losses and looking for a miracle and fast.

And McCabe, whose side are a point ahead of fifth-place Dunfermline with a game in hand and two clear of a Morton side they host on Saturday, said: "It was deserved given the manner of the performance, we were unlucky with the penalty and goal towards the end as on the whole we defended brilliantly.

"We've given ourselves an opportunity for the play-offs and that's all you can ask, I still think there's five or six twists and tales to come in the season.

"Overall, coming up to a tough ground in horrible conditions to come away with three points at this stage of the season is very good."

With the hosts toiling at the bottom, they almost got off to the worst possible start after 20 seconds, Aaron Lyall saw a curled effort denied by Max Boruc after a poor kick-out from the on-loan Hibs goalkeeper.

The visitors continued to threaten on 19 minutes as a Kanayo Megwa ball was sent behind for a corner by Gordon Walker.
