Antony has obvious challenge after winning Manchester United award

It is fair to say the jury is still out on Antony after his divisive debut season for Manchester United.

The 23-year-old has shown glimpses of world-class talent in his first year at the club, though it is a campaign that will be remembered just as much for the frustrations as the flair.

He is a player whose risky approach will polarise supporters; some love the tricky winger and the sense of mystery he brings to the right wing role, while others will be pulling their hair out over the unnecessary flamboyance that often takes center stage.

What everyone will agree on is that he needs more time before a fair judgment can be passed. Antony is not only new to English football, but he is also relatively new to the European game as well, and he needs more time to settle in before expectations can be raised.

His cause is also not done any favours by the enormous £80million price tag attached to him and the added expectation that comes as a result of that. He won't ever be able to shake that, but he will certainly learn to cope with it over time.

It means that Antony has a point to prove every time he takes to the pitch, something that can often blur his decision-making, though that again should improve as he gets more comfortable in his new surroundings.

What is a relief is that there is genuine reason to be confident in his ability. Though the Brazilian forward hasn't always been able to produce the goods when it matters most, he has done so on occasion, often in spectacular fashion.
