Antonio Maurogiovanni to depart high performance role as Rowing Ireland opts not to renew contract

High performance director Antonio Maurogiovanni will leave Rowing Ireland after the decision was made not to renew his contract.

The Italian was at the helm for the last two Olympiads, where Ireland won four medals, but Maurogiovanni will depart his role by the end of the year when his four-year contract expires.

A spokesperson for Rowing Ireland confirmed to RTÉ Sport that the body will now focus on developing a new long-term strategy following the removal of lightweight categories from the Los Angeles 2028 schedule in favour of coastal rowing.

Until a new high performance director is appointed, national lightweight coach Dominic Casey will fill in on an interim basis.

The team for Paris 2024 comprised a record seven crews and won gold and bronze medals.

Giovanni's achievements as the head of the Ireland programme also included a string of World Championship and European Championship medals.
