Antonio Conte says Manchester United must 'fail' for Tottenham to succeed

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has named Manchester United and Man City as two of the teams that need to 'fail' for his side to succeed.

Spurs currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, two points behind United who they visit in the day's late kick-off. Conte joined the North London club in November after Tottenham sacked Nuno Espirito Santo, following defeat to United.

The club are now embroiled in a battle for fourth spot with Arsenal, West Ham and the Reds, making Saturday's clash even more significant. Speaking to the media ahead of the game, Conte believes that four teams need to underachieve for Tottenham to be successful in their pursuit of European football.

Conte explained: "Since my arrival at Tottenham we have improved a lot in many aspects. I knew that and then I was depressed, I didn't want to see up and down and up and down [performances], I wanted to see a stable team.

"We have tried to reduce this gap that exists because at the moment in this league there are four teams, Manchester City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea, in my opinion are at the top. At the moment you have to hope one of these teams fail to finish in the top four.

"If this happens then we have to try to stay really close and fight until the end for the Champions League. It would be outstanding for us to win a Champions League place at the end of the season because this season for Tottenham has been very difficult in many aspects."
