Antonio Conte has been proven right about Christian Eriksen after Manchester United transfer

Manchester United produced their best performance of the season so far on Monday evening to secure their first win of the Erik ten Hag era, beating Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford found the back of the net either side of the half-time interval to ensure the Reds bounced back from their 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Brentford in the best possible manner. Mohamed Salah pulled a goal back for Liverpool late on, netting a close-range header, but United had already done enough to secure a fully deserved win.

Manager Ten Hag's bold decision to make four changes to his starting line-up, which saw him drop Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo, paid dividends, as United produced their best showing for several months. They were quick, strong and energetic from the first whistle and stunned Liverpool, who struggled to produce any sort of answer.

As well as dropping Maguire and Ronaldo, Ten Hag also axed Fred from his starting line-up for the first time this season, recalling Scott McTominay. He was joined in midfield by summer signing Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes.

Considering Eriksen and Fernandes are both seasoned attacking-midfielders, the midfield trio that Ten Hag chose carried a degree of risk about it, with McTominay the only defensive-minded midfielder in the starting line-up. Liverpool dismantled United in midfield last season and some supporters, at the time of seeing the teamsheet before kick-off, feared a repeat could be on the cards.
