Anthony Ginting - Victor Axelsen Rivalry Heats Up in Indonesia Open 2022

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rivalry between Anthony Ginting and Viktor Axelsen is heating up at Indonesia Open 2022 as the two shuttlers will meet in the quarter-finals match today, June 17, at Istora Gelora Bung Karno (GBK), Senayan, Jakarta.

The two world's top badminton players will meet for the 12th time at the BWF Super 1000 tournament.

Based on previous records, the Danish ace dominated the meeting with the hometown hero as he bagged seven wins, including the last five meetings.

The two were last met in the semifinals of the Indonesia Masters last week where Axelsen ousted Ginting with two straight games 21-15 and 21-15 and managed to clinch the gold medal of the Super 500 tournament after defeating Taiwanese shuttler Chou Tien-Chen with a score of 21-10 and 21-12.

Thus on paper, the rivalry was dominated by the world’s number one who is also the defending champion

Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, however, is determined to avenge his past defeat from which he claimed to have learned a lot. “I will learn from last week's defeat, so I can give my best in the next match,” said the world’s number six.

Ginting's last win over Axelsen was at the Indonesia Masters 2020. At that time, the 25-year-old man won 22-20 and 21-11.

Throughout the whole journey at the Indonesia Open 2022 by far, both shuttlers performed well without losing a game.

Anthony Ginting in the second round on Thursday, June 16, defeated Danish shuttler Hans-Kristian Vittinghus by 21-17 and 21-9, while Viktor Axelsen won over Chinese shuttler Lu Guangzu.
