Anthony Elanga receives vile online racist abuse after Manchester United penalty miss

Manchester United starlet Anthony Elanga has received sickening racist abuse online after his penalty miss during the FA Cup fourth round defeat against Middlesbrough on Friday night.

Unable to be separated after 120 minutes, the fourth round tie had to be settled from 12 yards beneath the lights at Old Trafford - and it was Elanga who unfortunately missed for United as they crashed out.

Middlesbrough booked their place in the fifth round with a 8-7 win on spot-kicks.

Jadon Sancho and Matt Crooks scored either side of half-time - but there was controversy over that equaliser for the Championship side as a handball incident went undetected during the build-up.

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty in normal time.

However, when it came to the shoot-out, it was Sweden teenager Elanga who blazed over - although he will grow stronger for that heart-breaking experience.

Meanwhile, the promising United frontman was on the receiving end of vile racist abuse post-match.

A spokesperson for Meta, the company which owns popular social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, said it has already removed a number of comments on Elanga's Instagram page.

United teammates Marcus Rashford and Sancho were - along with Arsenal player Bukayo Saka - subject to sickening racist abuse after their penalty misses for England at Euro 2020.

Amid growing calls for social media companies to do more in such instances, the Meta investigation is ongoing.

Elanga has scored two goals in 11 senior outings since breaking into the United first-team.
