Annan Athletic player-boss savours bragging rights with derby win over Queen of the South
Annan player-boss Wullie Gibson savoured snatching the bragging rights in their derby day win over Queen of the South and insisted it was a special three points.
A Tommy Muir second half header secured the win and inflicted more away day agony on Queens who have yet to win, or even score, in a league game on the road.
Gibson said: “A win in this league is massive and they are all enjoyable.
“It’s three points and every game is hard fought, but it means a little bit more with it being the derby.
“You can see the fans, both home and away, turned out and there was not much in the game at all. But we took our chance and it was a great header from Tam Muir.”
There was confusion over the scorer at the time after the header went in off the far post, but the ball was rapidly knocked about by grounded keeper Ross Stewart only for Aidan Smith to pounce and rifle it into the net from close range then take the acclaim of the fans.
Gibson laughed: “Aidan will try and claim anything.
“It was well over the line (from Tam Muir’s header). Obviously I put the ball in (from the corner) and the linesman in front of me hesitated for a second, but then when I seen him running back towards the halfway line I knew that he had seen it was in.
“I was still in the position where I could see it was a good two yards over the line.”
The former player-manager of Queens celebrated wildly at the final whistle and asked about his jubilant reaction Gibson replied: “It means that to everybody.
“When Queens won it at Palmerston they were exactly the same. But I did go into the dressing room afterwards and told them (our players) to rein it in a bit and put a lid on it because it is only three points and the season still has a long way
