Annabel Wilson's US amateur bid ends at semi-final stage

Annabel Wilson's bid to become the first Irish player to win the US Women's Amateur Championship is over after she was beaten 2&1 by Monet Chun (Canada) in the semi-finals at Chambers Bay, Washington.

The 21-year old from Lurgan, an Irish international and member of last year's Curtis Cup team, was never ahead in the match after making a double bogey on the first where her miscued second shot ended in a near unplayable lie. Although she drew level with a birdie on the second, steady play from Chun, who won the Canadian Women's Amateur last month, gave her a two hole advantage at the turn.

Wilson pulled that back to one with a birdie on the tenth but a bogey on the par five 13th was costly for Wilson and with the four following holes halved Chun was through to the final where she will face Saki Baba (Japan).

Wilson, who is heading into her senior year at UCLA, was gracious in defeat: "I think on the front nine I just made a few wrong decisions, and that put me in kind of no-zone areas and couldn't make up-and-down for par. But other than that, I was happy. I was able to keep going right until the end.

"It's a great game. You're always learning. You’re always battling, whether that's out on the course or even what you’re working on. So yeah, just keep going and keep staying with it."
