Angel Gomes responds to Kobbie Mainoo statement with one-word message to Man United star

England started their new era after Gareth Southgate in style on Saturday with a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League.

Goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish handed Lee Carsley a victory in his first game as interim boss of the Three Lions. There were a number of stand-out performances by the men in white with Trent Alexander-Arnold being awarded Man of the Match.

But Manchester United ace Kobbie Mainoo continued to show fine levels of display at the highest level. The 19-year-old played 77 minutes alongside Rice in midfield and was impressive at the Aviva Stadium.

Mainoo's rise for club and country has been remarkable in the last 12 months. Since bursting onto the scene, the teenager has made 39 appearances at Old Trafford and an additional 10 for England.

One player who came through the same academy is Angel Gomes. The Lille star left United in 2020 after his minutes in the first-team were limited under a number of managers.

The versatile midfielder's stock has only risen since leaving England and made his debut in Ireland on Saturday, replacing Mainoo in the second-half. After the game, the 24-year-old sent a one-word message to Mainoo on social media.

Mainoo posted a series of images from the win on Saturday, including one of him coming off the field for Gomes. The Lille star commented on the post, writing "tranquillity".
