Ange Postecoglou must break up Celtic bomb squad in transfer window refresh of title winners
Those of us a certain age will remember the Hogmanay parties with the bells approaching and some old timer will demand a window gets opened, even if it’s about 10 degrees below outside with sideways blizzards.
The old superstition use to be it was to let the bad vibes get out and let a blast of good luck get in for the coming year ahead.
The same goes for the transfer window – only it’s in summer.
A lot of folk forget it’s a two way thing. They get so worked up about who will be coming in like a breath of fresh air and they don’t always realise it’s also a means of escape.
There will be the usual concerns for clubs about losing some of their prize assets.
But this window should also be a chance for some to clear out the decks as well.
Celtic fans are already in full transfer rumour mode and if Ange Postecoglou lands even half the names he’s been linked with he’ll have the cast of Ben Hur on the books for the new season.
Which is part of the Postecoglou puzzle in the next few weeks. There’s no doubt the Hoops boss will want to bolster and upgrade his group.
That’s a given.
But he’ll also be hoping to shift a few on as well.
The Celtic squad is already looking more bloated than yer auld da’s belly after Sunday’s bank holiday barbecue.
Postecoglou wants Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers on board again in the coming days and weeks but he’ll have a first team group of more than 30 players.
That’s a lot of folk to keep sweet. And the ones who are on the sidelines and not moaning are an even bigger problem.
Clubs can have guys on decent dough just happy to make up the numbers. No gaffer wants a bomb squad – the group of overpaid unplayables who are taking up oxygen along with their wages.
