Andy Murray says ‘I still believe I can win Wimbledon’ and working hard to ‘achieve that goal’

He concedes it “going to be an unbelievably difficult thing to do”, but Andy Murray believes he still has what it takes to win Wimbledon.

Murray is enjoying a renaissance as he is back up to No 51 in the ATP Rankings having slumped to outside the top 800 at one point as he struggled with injury.

The former world No 1 will face Australian James Duckworth in his opening fixture at SW19 next week and it will only be his fourth singles match at the tournament in five years.

The two-time champion missed the 2018 and 2019 editions as he was recovering from hip surgery while the tournament was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus.

Although not too many believe will back Murray to go all the way following his injury struggles the past few years, the 35-year-old has confidence in his ability.

Asked during a Bloomberg interview if he still believes he can win Wimbledon, he replied: “I think that is part of the motivation to still be out there competing.

“I know it’s going to be even harder to win Wimbledon than it was five, six years ago, but yeah I still believe and I am still working and training as hard as I can to try and achieve that goal.”

He added: “I know, obviously, that’s going to be an unbelievably difficult thing to do, but I do still believe that I’ve got great tennis in me.”
