Andy Murray delivers Wimbledon update as Scot reveals he played just four days after spinal surgery

Legendary Scot Andy Murray has cast further doubt on playing in the Wimbledon singles – revealing he started hitting tennis balls only four days after having spinal surgery.

The twice SW19 champion will leave his decision “until the very last moment”. And Murray also admitted: “I would say it's probably more likely that I'm not able to play singles right now.”

The double Olympic champion, who said playing doubles with his brother Jamie was more possible, insisted he does not want to end his career with his forced retiral at Queen’s Club last week. And the Dunblane superstar added he would make another farewell appearance if he is unable to play Wimbledon or the Olympics this summer. The Scot, 37, limped out of the cinch Championships after revealing he had been suffering “neural pain” in his lower back which caused him a loss of “power” and “co-ordination” in his right leg.

He went under the knife on Saturday and admitted making a decision on a potential farewell Wimbledon appearance was “hard” with the draw at 10am on Friday. Murray explained: “Obviously the last week's been pretty tough. There's a lot going on with me planning on finishing at the Olympics.

“I'm trying everything I can to play, I'm practising on the court, I'm rehabbing and trying to accelerate this process to give myself a chance to play. It has been mentioned to me, are you going to withdraw before the draw at 10am on Friday? And I'm like, ‘Well, no, I'm not. I'm going to wait until the last minute to see if I'm going to be able to and I've earned that right to do that’.
