Andy Goram tribute as Rangers ultras unveil poignant goal line banner at Ibrox for legendary keeper

The Union Bears ultras group have unveiled a tribute to Andy Goram following the legendary goalkeeper’s passing at the weekend, with a banner in the goal at Ibrox which simply reads ‘The Goalie’.

Goram died following a short battle with cancer on Saturday and fans have been mourning the 58-year-old who is regarded as the club’s greatest ever goalkeeper. There has been an outpouring of grief for the man who spent seven years between the sticks for the Light Blues and won 10 major honours for Rangers.

Former team-mates have spoken of their sadness at the loss of a true great while supporters created a shrine at the Ibrox gates following the news last the weekend. And now the Union Bears have paid their own tribute. The banner covers the goal with an image of Goram in his pomp, draped in Rangers scarves as he celebrated a major success.

Goram was affectionally known simply as ‘The Goalie’ and Ally McCoist spoke of his admiration for his bravery and courage during his battle against the illness. He said: “Andy got the news 10 weeks ago that he had been diagnosed with incurable cancer, he was given six months. The speed of it has been absolutely frightening.

"However, having gone to see him on a regular basis, first of all at the hospital in Wishaw, East Kilbride, eventually the hospice in Airdrie. First of all, I would like to thank everybody who looked after Andy, these girls and guys in these places are absolutely remarkable the job they do. I was there on Saturday morning with Bomber (John) Brown, the two of us were at his side when he passed, with his son Danny, and his ex wife Miriam, it was absolutely tragic.”
