Andrew Strauss admits Justin Langer could replace Chris Silverwood - "I wouldn't rule him out"

Sir Andrew Strauss has revealed that Justin Langer could become England 's next head coach, admitting that he "wouldn't rule him out" of the running.

Chris Silverwood was axed as England coach on Thursday following his side's 4-0 defeat to Australia in the Ashes and the ECB will now search for a replacement.

Managing director of men's cricket Ashley Giles and assistant coach Graham Thorpe have also left their roles, with Strauss stepping into the breach as a short-term replacement for Giles.

As part of his remit, Strauss will "recommend some structural changes to the England cricket department" and "give some sort of strategic direction".

He will also be tasked with appointing a caretaker coach for England's three-Test series against the West Indies next month, with Paul Collingwood, Richard Dawson and Alec Stewart all under consideration.

Whoever permanently replaces Giles will be responsible for picking Silverwood's long-term successor and Strauss has indicated that Langer is on the ECB's radar.

"I know him well," Strauss said. "On the surface, he's done a very good job of things with the Australian cricket team. So I wouldn't rule him out, but I'm sure there are plenty of others as well."

Langer is out of contract with Australia later this year and it appears unlikely that he will continue in the role after reports of a rift with senior players.

This is despite Langer leading Australia to their first T20 World Cup win and a dominant victory in the Ashes.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes Langer would be the perfect replacement for Silverwood, writing in the Telegraph : "I do not see any one else better suited than Langer to crack heads together and bring some tough management to a group of England
