Andre Onana vs Ederson statistic suggests critics of Man United goalkeeper aren't totally right

It’s not easy being Andre Onana just now.

The goalkeeper has struggled to bed in since arriving at Old Trafford with several high-profile errors sharpening the knives of pundits and prompting conversations around his suitability to be the Manchester United No.1. Onana was heralded as a summer solution to reshape how United play.

He helped Inter Milan reach a Champions League final last season and his ball-playing style certainly has its benefits. Bumps in the road were inevitable but the opening two months of the campaign have shone a light on what is a key position at Old Trafford and in modern-day football.

The stats so far don't make for great reading with United having dropped off defensively. But to lay the blame simply at Onana's door is misguided. United's 'expected goals against' this season is 12, and they have conceded 12. Onana's save percentage is 68.4 per cent, 10th of those to have played five games or more. Not great but not terrible, he's ahead of Ederson, Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope for context.

Clearly there are improvements for the Cameroon international to make but having an unsettled back four can't be helping the 27-year-old. United have had several different combinations across the backline and Onana, the one ever-present defensively, won't have been able to build up a rapport or a relationship.
