“An excellent addition” – Luton Town sign 22-year-old: The verdict

Luton Town had a strong season last year and defied many expectations by competing at the top end of the table. 

Their impressive form led the Hatters to finish the season sixth in the table leading them into the play-offs.

However, despite drawing 1-1 in the first leg of the semi-finals, a 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town in the second leg meant it was the Terriers who progressed to the final whilst Nathan Jones’ side face another season in the Championship.

Jones will be keen to strengthen his side ahead of the new season to ensure they are able to compete again next season.

On Monday, the club announced their first signing of the window in Alfie Doughty from Stoke City so we asked three writers here at FLW for their thoughts on the Hatters’ newest addition.

Alfie Doughty is an excellent addition at Luton Town, with Nathan Jones getting his man 18 months after he first tried.

A progressive and brave left-sided option, his pace, direct running and final third quality will be a huge boost to the Hatters, with the club possessing strong attacking options who will be on the end of his deliveries.

He also provides a degree of versatility, with Doughty able to operate all down the left-hand-side, so he will be able to fit the requirements, regardless of whether or not Luton stick with a back three.

Cover and competition for Amari’i Bell was high up on the priority list for Jones this summer and he has been able to address that early on in the window.
