Amazing photo finish decides Beijing 2022 speed skating men’s mass start medals before Ice Queen wins gold

Belgian speed skater Bart Swings has won men’s mass start gold at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics as an amazing photo finish behind him decided the silver and bronze medals.

Swings improved on the silver he won in the frenetic event at PyeongChang 2018, while two South Koreans edged out a world champion to reach the podium.

Chung Jae Won took silver from defending Olympic champion Lee Seung Hoon, who snared bronze from the United States’ three-time world champion Joey Mantia.

Mantia posted the same time as Lee.

But replays showed the tip of the South Korean’s skate crossed the line just ahead of Mantia’s blade.

Swings became the first individual Winter Olympic gold medallist for his country, which had won its only previous gold in pairs figure skating at the 1948 Games.

“I always want to raise the bar to the next level,” Swings said.

Netherlands star Irene Schouten won her third gold medal at Beijing 2022 after outsprinting Canada’s Ivanie Blondin to win the women’s mass start.

In the final speedskating event of the program, Schouten sealed her position as the queen of the Ice Ribbon with a furious push to line to beat Blondin by 0.06 seconds.

Schouten let out a scream as she crossed the line, adding to her gold medals in the 3000m and 5000m.

In a nifty bookend, she won the first and last speedskating events in Beijing.
