'Amazing' Limerick footballers reaping rewards

Not many outside of the Limerick football camp would have predicted a Division 2 status for 2023, but Billy Lee's side have been one of the success stories of this year’s league.

A five-point victory over Fermanagh yesterday secured second place behind Louth in Division 3 and are now also assured of Sam Maguire football instead of the Tailteann Cup.

It has been far from an overnight success – Lee has been in charge for five years and the academy structure that was set out in 2013 is beginning to bear fruit – but on the pitch the Shannonsiders have caught the eye with some outstanding displays in the early season.

A six-point defeat to Westmeath was the main blip, while the narrow loss to Louth came about with the men in green unable to hold onto a five-point lead heading into the final quarter.

Other than that, Antrim, Laois, Wicklow, Longford and finally the Farney men have come up short against the Munster side and speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Oisin McConville says there is no reason why they can’t continue on a positive trajectory.

"A lot of people looked at Limerick and probably saw a ceiling for them of Division 3, but next year they will be playing against some of the top teams in the country including Dublin.

"There’s nothing to say that they can’t make another step. I think a couple of years floating around Division 2 will do them no harm whatsoever.

"The progression has been amazing. Not to patronise them, the football they have played, even against Fermanagh yesterday who were all out to get a result, has been superb."

Isn't playing Dublin next year some change around in your fortune?
