Amanda Staveley makes Newcastle admission after Manchester United won Carabao Cup

Co-owner Amanda Staveley says Newcastle United will have their day of glory in the years to come after the club's defeat to Manchester United in Sunday’s “tough” Carabao Cup final, promising to win domestic and European honours in the future.

First-half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford saw the Reds to their first trophy in six seasons as Erik ten Hag earned his maiden accolade of his tenure. Newcastle were featuring in their first final since 1999 having last won a domestic trophy, the FA Cup, in 1955.

So, despite losing the showdown, it was a weekend to savour for Newcastle fans, who added to the Wembley occasion alongside the raucous United faithful. The Magpies reached the final 16 months after the takeover of the Saudi Public Investment Fund with United currently undergoing a potential takeover process of their own.

Staveley - who met United co-owner Avram Glazer ahead of kick-off - conceded that the final was a “tough game” and suggested Newcastle didn’t get the rub of the green. “I was just in awe, I knew [the Newcastle support] would be amazing,” she told talkSPORT.

“I'm sorry, I really feel bad because I so wanted a win because I wanted them to have some silverware. It was important but we'll get there, but the lads played really well. It was a tough game, it was tough luck, and I'm proud of all of the fans and hugely proud of everybody today."

Staveley said she was “humbled” by the reaction from the Newcastle fans and boldly vowed to bring home the biggest prizes in domestic and European football in the years to come.

"We will win the Carabao Cup, we will win the FA Cup, we will win the Champions League and we will win the Premier
