'Always excited about the team' - Kenny looks to future

Stephen Kenny said that his side were still a work in progress following their impressive 3-0 victory over Scotland, however, the manager is confident that a fine team is set to emerge in the coming years.

Goals from Alan Browne, Troy Parrott and Michael Obafemi secured Ireland their first ever Nations League win at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday evening as Kenny's side bounced back from two straight defeats to Armenia and Ukraine.

And now Kenny’s side travel to Poland to take on Ukraine in the return fixture brimming with confidence following a comprehensive win over their group rivals.

Discussing the youthful aspect to this emerging side in the post match press conference, it was mentioned to the manager that it was the first time that two players 21 or under have scored in a competitive game.

And Kenny was asked how excited he was by the team’s potential heading into the remaining games of the Nations League and on to Euro 2024 qualification.

"Right, that's a big question. A big question," said Kenny. "I don't want to make too big a statement either as it's a big question.

"We have seen a lot of good performances tonight from a lot of young players and experienced players also. We have the game on Tuesday and have to go to Hampden in September and Armenia at home.

"But at the forefront of our mind is going to the Ukraine (Poland) on Tuesday.

"I have always been excited about this team. I was excited last week about this team not because we won 3-0 today or because we lost 1-0. After Belgium here, 2-2, people thought we were absolutely brilliant, then we win 1-0 the next game and then lose a game and then it's a catastrophe.
