Alvaro Fernandez has told Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag something he can't ignore

Manchester United's preparations for Saturday's clash with Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford have been rocked by an injury to star left-back Luke Shaw.

United issued a statement on Thursday evening to confirm that the England international had suffered an unspecified muscular problem. They have said that he will be sidelined for a 'number of weeks'.

Shaw has cemented himself as a key figure within Erik ten Hag's plans over the past 12 months and has started United's opening two Premier League fixtures this season. He has made considerable progress under the Dutchman's stewardship.

United's announcement confirming Shaw's injury arrived just hours after the club confirmed the departure of fellow left-back Brandon Williams, who sealed a move to Championship side Ipswich Town. He has joined the Tractor Boys on a season-long loan deal.

With Tyrell Malacia, who joined United from Feyenoord just over a year ago, currently sidelined through injury, Alvaro Fernandez is the club's only fit and available left-back. He played four times during pre-season, offering glimpses of his potential.

The 20-year-old Spaniard, who joined United from Real Madrid in 2020, spent last season on loan at Championship side Preston North End, making 42 appearances in all competitions. He also chipped in with a respectable six assists.
