Ally McCoist pays emotional Queen tribute as Rangers legend shares Ibrox dressing room snapshot

Ally McCoist has paid an emotional tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The Rangers legend shared a picture of the famous royal portrait that has traditionally hung in the home dressing room at Ibrox, The club’s record goalscorer got changed before home matches under the photo for 15 years as he helped fire Rangers to nine-in-a-row before leaving for Kilmarnock in 1998.

The Queen passed away on Thursday afternoon at the age of 96. It was confirmed on Friday that all SPFL matches across four divisions would be postponed as a mark of respect to the late monarch, however other sporting events are going ahead as planned. Gio Van Bronckhorst’s team were set to travel north to take on Aberdeen at Pittodrie in a Saturday noon kick-off, while discussions are still taking place over Tuesday’s scheduled Champions league Group A clash at home to Serie A cracks Napoli.

In the wake of the Queen’s passing, McCoist took to Instagram to pay his own heartfelt tribute with a snapshot of her image within the Ibrox changing room.

He posted: “Nearly every day of my playing career at Rangers, I got ready for work under this picture. They were the happiest of days and we all loved it. The lady who was Queen Elizabeth II was so much to so many, myself included. Thanks for your service to us all.”

Queen Elizabeth is succeeded by her son, now King Charles III and it’s expected that his portrait will replace that of his mother's after the national period of mourning has come to an end.

Supporters have been pay9ng their own tributes since the news broke on Thursday. Flowers and messages of condolence have been left outside the Govan ground.
