Ally McCoist passes up Celtic troll for Rangers reminder as he resists Kilmarnock temptation in 'special mention'

Rangers hero Ally McCoist opted not to take a swipe at Celtic after they crashed out of the Viaplay Cup in a shock defeat to Brendan Rodgers.

Instead the Ibrox hero reminder his former side that they have also suffered defeat to the Ayrshire side this term as he heaped praise on his former teammate Derek McInnes for his early season heroics. A Marley Watkins goal ramped up the pressure on Brendan Rodgers' Celtic side after the 1-0 last 16 exit - with Kilmarnock ending any hope of repeating the Treble achieved under Ange Postecoglou last season just three games into the Hoops campaign.

McInnes has already led Killie to a victory over Michael Beale's men in the Scottish Premiership opener at Rugby Park - and McCoist made sure to give a nod to his former Rangers and Scotland teammate for his achievements early in the season. And he refused to let Rangers off the hook despite the Celtic upset dominating the talking points coming out of the weekend.

Speaking on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show, McCoist said: "I have to give a special mention to Derek McInnes at Kilmarnock. The season is only two weeks old and they have beaten Rangers already at home, and at the weekend knocked Celtic out of the cup.

"They also they had a good draw a Tynecastle against Hearts. So it's an excellent start."
