He was a man of very few words when it came to interviews and when he did choose to face the camera it usually ended up with him causing a bit of hilarity.
So it's easy to see why armchair Rangers fans are keen to see how Allan McGregor gets on when he makes his Premier Sports punditry debut at Saturday's Scottish Cup final - with his old rival Scott Brown joining him for good measure. The pair were fierce rivals on opposite side of the bitter Old Firm divide for the best part of 15 years but instead of sharing the pitch it will be the gantry at Hampden when their former clubs do battle in the season showpiece.
Premier Sports announced their line-up with McGregor and Brown, also former Scotland team-mates, included. McGregor's close friend and former Ibrox team-mate Alan Hutton is also part of the team and Brown's former Celtic boss Neil Lennon signed up after he was recently appointing Rapid Bucharest boss.
While Brown and McGregor were fierce rivals, there was also a mutual respect. Following a victory over Rangers at Parkhead in McGregor's first season back at Ibrox under Steven Gerrard in 2018, Brown said: "We played well and could have scored a few more goals had it not been for Allan McGregor – I thought he was terrific today.”
McGregor was reluctant to conduct media interviews during his second spell at Rangers but when he did speak he was straight to the point. Speaking to Sky Sports about their performance after a 1-1 draw at Hamilton Accies in 2021 he said: “Rubbish. I thought that for most of the game we were very very poor – the worst I’ve seen us.”
And after a world class save against Slavia Prague in the Europa League he had fans in hysterics when he played it down, saying: "It's just one of these things.
