All-Ireland winner Johnny Coen calls time on Galway career

Johnny Coen has called time on his inter-county hurling career, announcing that he has retired after a 12-year spell with Galway.

Coen was a member of the 2017 All-Ireland winning side that beat Waterford 0-26 to 2-17 in the final.

The Loughrea man started in midfield as the Tribesmen won their first hurling All-Ireland championship in 29 years.

Coen also won two Leinster titles – including Galway's first ever in 2012 - and two National Leagues in the maroon jersey of his native county, while he also enjoyed All-Ireland success at minor and Under-21 level.

The Galway stalwart was named Young Hurler of the Year at the 2012 All-Stars.

"It’s been a huge honour and privilege to play senior hurling with Galway. Now the time has come to retire from inter-county after 12 years in the maroon and white," said Coen, posting on social media.

"It’s been some journey from corner-back to corner-forward and everything in between.

"I’ve been privileged to share a dressing room with so many wonderful players and work with great people and management teams along the way which I am forever grateful.

"I am fortunate to be part of an incredible GAA club in Loughrea and look forward to continuing my career in the blue and yellow for many more years to come."
