Springbok assistant coach Deon Davids reckons the inclusion of Crusaders forwards coach Jason Ryan will sharpen up the All Blacks' maul.

The All Blacks were caught short in that department in the second and third Tests against Ireland that they lost to concede a three-Test series at home for the first time since 1986.

"Their new forwards coach emphasised that it's an area where they want to improve. When you look at the work he's put in with Fiji and the Crusaders, we understand it's going to be a challenge.

"We also want to get better in that department."
