Alejandro Garnacho's Lamine Yamal message shows why Man United transfer can be done

No Manchester United supporter wants to see a player sold when their better days are still ahead of them and Alejandro Garnacho fits that bracket perfectly.

In Erik ten Hag's system that utilised wingers, Garnacho showed the promise needed to advance beyond the academy, into the first team and make a difference. However, upon Ten Hag's departure in October and Ruben Amorim's arrival in November, Garnacho has felt more and more like a square peg in a round hole.

Where Amad has managed to adapt to play centrally as one of Amorim's No.10s, Garnacho has not looked comfortable in the middle of the park. The only other alternative was to play the Argentine as a wing-back but it is clear that he is far too attacking and defensively naive for such a role.

That leaves United with a problem, particularly considering the need to add new recruits this summer to fit Amorim's style of play. Ineos simply cannot afford to keep a player that has such high re-sale value and does not fit seamlessly into the starting XI moving forward.

Amorim has been unwilling to negotiate on his principles so it is not as if Garnacho could be kept as a Plan B. Where United have struggled in the past has been selling players - Old Trafford is the pinnacle and the comfortable wage makes leaving even less intriguing.

Scott McTominay broke the mould last summer and there is evidence that Garnacho could do the same. After he ran the show on Wednesday for Barcelona in their draw with Inter in the Champions League, Lamine Yamal was inundated with congratulatory messages with few believing that a player who is just 17 can be so comfortable on one of the biggest stages.

Among those to reach out was Garnacho who replied to Yamal's post: "Best player in the world."
