Alejandro Garnacho confirms his new Manchester United squad number

Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho has confirmed he will wear the number 17 shirt this season.

The club's provisional squad numbers were submitted to the Premier League before the start of the season, but they are subject to change and Garnacho has revealed he'll now wear the No.17 shirt with a post on social media.

The player's brother shared a photo of Garnacho in a No.17 shirt on Thursday night along with the caption: "AG17."

Garnacho previously donned the No.49 shirt after breaking into the first-team from the academy last season and he's chosen the No.17 shirt because his idol Cristiano Ronaldo wore that number for Portugal when he was younger.

Garnacho's brother teased he would wear No.17 earlier in the week by posting a photo of Ronaldo in that shirt. Fred was the last player to wear the No.17 at Old Trafford but his exit this summer meant it was available.

Rasmus Hojlund is still without a squad number but that will change soon after the transfer window closes.

Garnacho being given the No.17 is a recognition of his progress at the club. The winger was the poster boy of the Under-18 team that won the 2021/22 FA Youth Cup and he's now an established first-team member with Erik ten Hag in charge.

He's made 38 senior appearances for United, scoring five goals.
