Alan Shearer makes Jurgen Klopp comparison on Pep Guardiola future at Man City

Alan Shearer says he would understand if Pep Guardiola wanted a break from management in the coming years given the demands placed on an elite Premier League manager.

Jurgen Klopp bowed out of Liverpool on Sunday after nine seasons with Guardiola set to enter his ninth year at the Etihad Stadium next campaign. The Catalan coach’s contract expires next year, by which time he will have made a decision on his future.

Speaking after City lifted a record fourth straight title on Sunday, Guardiola said: “The reality is I am closer to leaving than staying. It's eight years, will be nine. Right now, my feeling is I am staying next season.”

Discussing these comments on Match of the Day, Gary Lineker predicted that Guardiola may stay on another three years. He said: “We heard from Pep there saying he's closer to leaving than doing another seven years, so you can read perhaps that that's possibly three years.

“Contract's up at the end of next year. It would be remarkable if he kept going and going as he's had two patches where he's taken time out before.”

Shearer likened Guardiola’s situation to Klopp, who announced in January that he would be leaving Liverpool due to a lack of energy. He said an exit for the Man City manager would give rivals a boost, although can't see that happening just yet.

Shearer said: “You understand that and we've seen what Jurgen [Klopp] has done because we know how difficult the job is, the pressure that you're under and the toll it has on you as an individual.
