Alan Shearer dishes Celtic and Rangers truth pill out as Premier League icon reveals gnawing regret about rivals

English Premier League icon Alan Shearer believes Celtic and Rangers will never star south of the border...even though he would love to see it.

The EPL's all-time top goalscorer weighed into the ultimate fan debate and he reckons the great rivals would enhance the richest league in the world. The Newcastle hero talked up the enormity of the Glasgow duo who have long been linked with leaving Scottish football. Shearer – who was linked with a shock move to Parkhead when Kenny Dalglish returned to Celtic – doesn't expect the EPL to green light a move south for Scotland's biggest sides as he praised the famed atmospheres of both Ibrox and Celtic Park.

Speaking on the The Rest is Football podcast, he said: “The atmosphere in those grounds is amazing. The support they have around the world is fantastic, so they are two giant clubs. Absolutely, it would be brilliant if they could be in the Premier League. But I don’t think we are ever going to see it – it’s never going to happen.”

The groundswell for Celtic and Rangers to head south peaked in the early 00s but a move never came off. And with the established top six in the EPL earning mega millions it would appear unlikely to take place in the near future.

And now Celtic and Rangers - both dead against the latest Super League – are aiming to secure guaranteed access to the Champions League next season which guarantees eight fixtures and added millions in TV and gate revenue.
