Alan Shearer blasts Manchester United board for three key decisions that have caused 'chaos'

Alan Shearer reckons Manchester United have descended into 'chaos' due to temporary decisions that have been made in the Old Trafford boardroom.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick is set to continue in the United dugout until the end of this season.

At that stage, the German will be replaced by a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - with PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag from Ajax viewed as two leading contenders.

Michael Carrick also had three games in charge between Solskjaer leaving and Rangnick stepping in.

Amid those decisions, United are facing an almighty battle to clinch top-four this season and even if they do claim that fourth and final place in the Champions League, the Old Trafford giants are still worlds behind Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League pecking order.

During his latest column for The Athletic, pundit Shearer said: "When I look at Manchester United, I see chaos and a team lacking any kind of discernible identity and an institution bereft of strategy, whose last three managers, if you include Michael Carrick, have been temporary appointments.

"They have become an interim football club - a club of caretakers, where authority has become diluted and players inhabit a world of excuses - who have spent an absolute fortune to become truly unexceptional.

"On the pitch, they are frayed and ragged, edgy and bad-tempered, casting around for someone else to blame. They are unsure of who and what they are. What a leaky, noisy, messy club they have become."
