Akpan is most outstanding woman athlete as UNIPORT fights off UNILAG’s charge

University of Port Harcourt’s (UNIPORT) Abasiono Akpan has emerged the most outstanding woman athlete at the ongoing NUGA Games with an impressive four gold medals (800m, 4x400m, 4x400m mixed and 400m hurdles) and one silver (100m hurdles).

Mercy Honesty, also of UNIPORT, took the second position with three medals, including gold in the women’s long jump, triple jump and a bronze in the 4x100m race.

Kingsley Oryia from UNN emerged best male athlete with three gold medals in men’s 3,000m, 5,000m and 10,000m. He also won the Enugu marathon race last year.

UNILAG beat ABU 3-1 to quality for tomorrow’s men’s volleyball semifinals. Its women’s basketball team beat BIU and will face OAU, who saw off Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK).   In the 4x400m men’s relay, UNILAG won gold; UNIPORT took silver, while FUTA bagged bronze. The 4x100m men’s relay race saw UNILAG winning another gold, silver went to FUOYE and UNIPORT took the bronze medal.

In the women’s 4x100m relay race, FUNAAB took the gold medal; UNIUYO got the silver, while UNIPORT settled for bronze. But UNIPORT beat UNILAG to the gold medal in the women 3000m, while UNIBEN settled for bronze. UNN won the men’s gold medal in the race; UNIOSUN claimed silver and UNILAG took the bronze medal.      Unilag men’s basketball team will battle with Nile University in the final, while their women counterparts will meet OAU to determine the winner of the gold medal.     UNIPORT still lead the medals table with 67 total and look poised to hold on to their top position despite UNILAG’s hot challenge.
