Airdrie star Ben Wilson won't set any goals targets despite early scoring spree

Airdrie summer signing Ben Wilson took his scoring spree to a sensational six goals in four games – then insisted he won’t set himself any targets for the season.

The Northern Irishman joined the Diamonds from Cliftonville last month having netted 20 goals for the Northern Irish Premiership side last season and he has got off to a fast start in Scotland in the group stages of the Premier Sports League Cup.

He has so far hit a hat-trick in the 8-0 win over East Kilbride and netted in the 4-3 win at Dumbarton, grabbed the opener in a 2-1 defeat at Aberdeen and broke the deadlock on Saturday’s 2-0 win over Queen of the South that secured Airdrie a last 16 tie away to Dundee next month.

The Diamonds faithful will be hoping his fine form continues as Airdrie prepare to kick-off their Championship campaign at home to Raith Rovers on Saturday, when former Airdrie boss Ian Murray makes his return.

But while Wilson hopes he can help fire the team to promotion this term, he won’t be setting any lofty numbers.

He said: “I don’t really set targets, I just want to get as many goals as I can just to help the team as best I can. I scored 18 in the league and 20 all in last season. Hopefully I can do something similar, that would be a good.

“I want to build on that from last year and just keep pushing forward and get as many as I can. I just want to play first and foremost. Get minutes on the pitch, consistency and I can add goals to my game too and thankfully I’ve done that so far. The club finished in the play-offs last season and that will be the aim again or even higher. Everyone has got that belief.”
