Airdrie should have had a penalty, but we weren't great, admits captain

Airdrie captain Adam Frizzell was gob-smacked not to receive a penalty against Ayr when his shot hit an arm inside the box – but admits the Diamonds weren’t firing on all cylinders.

Frizzell and his Diamonds team-mates appealed to referee Iain Snedden when his shot was blocked inside the box in 70 minutes, three minutes after Lewis McGregor had halved the deficit against the Honest Men.

Ayr had gone 2-0 up through Logan Chalmers and Anton Dowds, and while Frizzell knows they weren’t at their best, he still felt they could have taken a point.

He said: “I don’t understand how it’s not hand-ball, but hopefully these things even out across the season – sometimes they go for you sometimes they go against you.

“I thought we probably weren’t firing on all cylinders, but it was probably one where it was as poor, in terms of getting decisions from the ref, as I’ve seen.

“But it’s one of those days where we need to put it down to experience, take our licks and move on to the next one.

“It’s an up and down league, but we’re very disappointed not to win the game at home – especially having probably taken going 2-0 down to start playing, which is the most frustrating thing for us.

“I thought we maybe did enough in the end to take something from the game, but we’ll take our licks.”

Airdrie are idle this weekend because their SPFL Trust Trophy clash at Rangers ‘B’ has been moved to November, and they’re next in action at home to Queen’s Park on Friday, October 20.

Former Kilmarnock midfielder Frizzell said: “When you lose, you want to get right back out there and put it right, but we just need to work on our weaknesses over the next week and a half and be ready for next Friday night against Queen’s Park.

“We were 100 per cent at home
