Air ambulances land as two seriously injured in smash between motorbike and taxi

Two people were left seriously injured after a crash between a motorbike and a taxi in Salford.

Emergency services including police officers, incident response and two air ambulances were scrambled to the scene of the smash in Walkden yesterday (Tuesday) at around 6.20pm. Manchester Road East was cordoned off for a number of hours as crews responded.

The air ambulances landed on a nearby Tesco Extra car park. Police said two people were seriously injured in the smash.

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing at this stage. Enquiries into the crash - which happened at the junction with Ridyard Street - are ongoing.

According to eyewitnesses, the motorbike collided with the white taxi, smashing into the side of it before two riders were 'thrown in the air'. Yesterday, one person who saw the collision told the Manchester Evening News: "There were loads of people around them.

"Loads of people was getting out of cars and running across the road. I heard the guy on the floor just screaming in pain - it was horrible.

"Both of them were thrown in the air over the taxi. They have gone into the side of it and both gone over. We were on the way down in the car when they crashed."

Pictures taken at the scene showed a damaged taxi and a motorbike on the floor. The air ambulances were also seen leaving the scene shortly before 8pm before the main road reopened

In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to a collision between a taxi and a motorbike on the junction of Manchester Road and Ridyard Street, Little Hulton, at around 6.20pm yesterday (4 July 2023).
