Air ambulance lands at Penarth downhill derby as participant seriously hurt
An air ambulance has attended an emergency at the popular Penarth Downhill Derby annual race. Several witnesses who contacted WalesOnline described paramedics attending an emergency.
The event is a popular race in which teams compete to race homemade carts down Cliff Hill in the seaside town. Witnesses described people holding up sheets to provide privacy while someone was taken into an ambulance. The event has been cancelled.
South Wales Police said a participant in the event had been taken to hospital and was in a serious condition and the incident was ongoing. WalesOnline has seen video clips of the incident which appear to show a participant being thrown off one of the vehicles.
