Aidan Walsh keeps Olympic dream alive in Bangkok

Aidan Walsh safely progressed to the round of 32 at the final Olympic qualifier in Bangkok on Sunday after a comprehensive defeat of 71kg Kenyan opponent Boniface Mogunde Maina.

The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist was beaten by Brazilian Wanderson de Oliveira at the most recent Olympic qualification tournament in March.

However, the Belfast 26-year-old kept his hopes alive in Thailand with a unanimous victory over Maina, and will now fight for a spot in the last 16 on Tuesday.

In a stacked weight division, Walsh will have to make it to the semi-finals and then win that bout to guarantee himself a spot at the Olympics. If he lost in the semis, he'd face a box-off to nab one of the places on offer.

On Friday, Grainne Walsh made a perfect start to her bid to reach the Paris Games as she eased into the last 32.

The Offaly fighter defeated Vietnam's Mai Ngoc Hoang 5-0 on the judges' cards in their 66kg welterweight class bout. Next up for Walsh is a bout with North Korea's Hyo Sun Hwang on Wednesday.
