"Agreement in place..": Journo drops major Rangers transfer update that'll delight GvB - opinion

A major Glasgow Rangers update has emerged on their pursuit of a replacement for Calvin Bassey in the summer transfer window…

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Rangers are on the verge of finalising the transfer of Ben Davies to Ibrox this week.

The Gers have agreed a fee for the central defender and the reporter has now confirmed that Jurgen Klopp has given the move the green light.

He Tweeted: “Rangers have completed Ben Davies deal, agreement in place and contracts now being prepared. Liverpool will receive £3m guaranteed fee plus £1m in add-ons. Klopp approved the deal – Davies will replace Bassey who is joining Ajax, as revealed on Saturday.”

Romano then dropped an update on the big exit from Glasgow, Tweeting: “Calvin Bassey, new Ajax player – he’s set to sign the contract today valid until June 2026 with an option for further season. It’s done deal since Saturday, to be unveiled soon.”

The Ibrox head coach will be delighted with this claim on Davies as he has the quality to be an excellent signing for the Scottish giants.

Losing Bassey is a blow and the Nigeria international’s exit leaves a big hole, both at left-back and centre-back. In Davies, Rangers can fill the latter position and be confident that they have a player who can excel for the club in that role next season.

The 26-year-old spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan to Sheffield United in the Championship and caught the eye with strong displays at the back. He averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.97 in the second tier across 22 outings for the Blades, making 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game and winning 61% of his individual duels.

This came after he averaged a score of 6.99 in the division for Preston in 2020/21, prior to his move to Liverpool in January
