Adults can't figure out homework question for six-year olds – try to solve it

If you're a parent of a school-age child, you've likely had to assist them with their challenging homework at some point over the years. However, even those with high IQs can find certain subjects difficult, as one mum discovered this week.

She sought help from other adults on Reddit after being stumped by a maths question intended for her six-year old. After posting a picture of a "Real world maths" puzzle, she asked: "Can anyone make sense of this?"

The question was: "Use pieces of pasta, buttons or other small objects you can find at home. Make each number on the 10 frames in a different way. How did you count them?" It also stated: "Ask an adult how many there are. How did the adult count them?" Below the numbers 10-16 were 20 boxes in two lots of two-by-five.

Many other Reddit users seemed equally as puzzled. "What do they mean by making them each 'in a different way'? That's the part that's confusing me," one person responded. "It's a very poorly worded question. And since they haven't given any examples, I can imagine lots of people getting confused."

A second added: "Not referring to this, but primary school seems way harder for my nephew than it ever was for us. It's definitely a good thing, especially for maths, but it has led to a few instances of a six year old outdoing his 37 year old mum and dad."

A third Reddit user attempted to explain the concept, commenting: "It only makes sense if you know that each of those 5x2 boxes is called a 'ten frame'. That's the name the kids are taught in school and they will have learned to count to 10 and do arithmetic up to 10 using one of these."
