Admiral Okoja tasks Ondo Water Sports chair on development

Rear Admiral Andrew Okoja (Rtd), Chairman of the Mercury Maritime Concession Company Limited (MMCC), has called on Tunde Giwa-Daramola, the newly appointed Chairman of the Ondo State Rowing, Canoeing, and Sailing Association, to prioritise the development of water sports in the state.

Speaking during Giwa-Daramola’s courtesy visit to MMCC’s corporate headquarters on Thursday, Admiral Okoja emphasised the vital role of water sports in enhancing the marine sector and engaging local youth. He linked this initiative to the proposed $30 billion Escravos Seaport Industrial Complex, which he said would include recreational facilities to support sports.

“Eighty-five percent of Nigeria’s trade depends on the marine sector, and integrating sports into this ecosystem will engage youth in host communities, provide employment, and enhance recreation,” Admiral Okoja said. He expressed confidence in Giwa-Daramola’s leadership, citing his experience as a two-time Commodore of the Navy Sailing Club as evidence of his capability to drive the initiative.

Okoja also pledged MMCC’s support for the development of water sports in Ondo State, adding that such efforts would empower riverine communities. “The MMCC is ready to support your efforts to ensure athletes from riverine communities are actively involved in these sports,” he said.

In his response, Giwa-Daramola outlined his vision for water sports in the state, stressing the need to popularise them among riverine communities, which have historically produced talented athletes despite lacking facilities. He also revealed plans to collaborate with stakeholders to establish an International Aquatic Centre in Igbokoda, which would train athletes from Nigeria and across West Africa.
