Adidas releases statement on Mason Greenwood amid Manchester United return claims

Manchester United kit manufacturer Adidas says they have not held discussions with the club regarding a return for Mason Greenwood.

Reports elsewhere on Friday evening claimed that the sportswear giant had approved a potential comeback for the 21-year-old, who still remains suspended by United.

Greenwood had charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault against him dropped on February 2. He has always denied the allegations.

Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022 and the club are currently conducting an internal investigation, which is yet to conclude. Adidas has branded speculation that it has held talks with United regarding a potential return for Greenwood as “inaccurate”, stating it plays no part in decisions made on players or staff.

In a statement relayed by The Daily Star, Adidas said: “After inaccurate and speculative reporting within the media it’s important for us to clarify that Adidas has had no discussions with Manchester United regarding any member of their playing squad.

"We play no role in any decisions made regarding any member of the team or staff at the club."

This comes four months after Nike, Greenwood’s former sponsor, clarified that it had not renewed ties with the player after alterations had been made to his Instagram account.

Earlier this month, the Manchester Evening News revealed that Atalanta were interested in taking in Greenwood on loan for next season.
