Access free vaccine and cost-of-living support this winter

There’s help on hand this winter for Manchester residents - that’s the message from the city’s politicians and public health chief.

The message comes as the city prepares for an anticipated seasonal increase in Covid-19 and flu cases, as well as the challenges surrounding the cost-of-living crisis.

With that in mind, all residents are urged to check if they are eligible for a free Covid-19 or flu vaccine, and to remember that it normally takes two weeks for either vaccine to be as effective as possible.

“Flu always comes into its peak period in winter and every year the strain changes, which is why we offer annual vaccines,” says Dr Cordelle Ofori, Manchester’s Director of Public Health.

“In general, both viruses can have more serious implications for older people, pregnant women, babies and people living with health conditions.

“As well as making you very ill they can also cost in so many other ways. They cost your time, your plans, and your peace of mind about your family or people who may be more at risk. They even have financial implications for people who may not receive sick pay, or can’t afford to buy over-the-counter medications.

“So, please do take up the vaccines if you are offered, or talk to our teams if you have any questions.”

Support doesn't stop at vaccines for physical health - Manchester City Council is also there for anyone who is concerned about their well-being or the effects of the cost-of-living crisis.

Its free helpline offers help with any issues around heating, money, food or debt, and staff can also direct people on where to make any Pension Credit claims before the December 21, 2024, deadline.

Simply call 0800 023 2692 or text 07860 022876.

“Please do make the most of this advice line,”
