'Absolute joke' - Sunderland fans fume as Man United legend Roy Keane rejects manager job

Sunderland fans have reacted angrily to reports that Roy Keane has turned down the chance to become their manager again – but they’re not blaming the Manchester United legend.

Keane had looked set to make his return to management and the Stadium of Light after interviewing for the job over the past week following the sacking of Lee Johnson.

The former United captain had remained guarded when asked about the position while working as a pundit for ITV over the weekend, but reports from the north-east suggested he was closing in on the job.

But, according to reports, Keane is no longer being considered, with Sunderland now turning their attentions elsewhere.

The report claims Keane was offered the position after undergoing at least two interviews with Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman.

But, over the course of the last 24 hours, it has become clear the former midfielder will not be returning to Wearside, having previously managed Sunderland between 2006 and 2008.

And the club’s fans are not happy with their club, having been preparing themselves for Keane’s return.

With Keane out of the running, Sunderland will now turn their attentions elsewhere, with former Preston boss Alex Neil, ex-Hull City manager Grant McCann and Sabri Lamouchi thought to be in the running.

Keane, meanwhile, will likely continue with his punditry work, although the former United captain has made clear his desire to return to management.
