Aborted landings and wobbly planes at Manchester Airport as strong winds batter region
There were a number of aborted landings and 'go arounds' at Manchester Airport on Sunday (December 22) as another day of heavy rain and strong winds battered the region.
Video footage taken by AviationUpClose showed a number of flights wobbling in the air and swaying from side to side as they approached the runway in Manchester throughout Sunday.
A Singapore Airlines flight, as well as two easyJet flights, two Ryanair flights and a Turkish Airlines flight had to abort their landings as winds of up to 50mph struck.
The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for wind over the weekend. Forecasters said 'some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport' were considered likely.
A go-around, also known as a missed approach or aborted landing, is a flight manoeuvre in which a pilot stops an aircraft from landing, pulls back up to the air and then attempts to touch down again.
Aviation enthusiast AviationUpClose shared the nail biting footage to Youtube, showing pilots attempting to touch down in Manchester on Sunday amid the yellow warning.
They wrote: "As usual I was on site from 05:30 to 16:00 to capture as much of the action as possible. With winds reaching 40 knots in the gusts there was plenty to see with some fantastic piloting on display. 6 Go arounds including two impressive touch and go's from the Singapore A350 & easyJet A320. There's plenty to see in this one!"
Elsewhere, flights to and from Manchester were cancelled following an incident caused by the adverse weather at Belfast City Airport. Emergency services were scrambled to the scene shortly after 4pm with other flights diverted to Belfast International Airport. This was due to the flight suffering a 'hard landing' - a nose wheel collapse.
