Aberdeen star could link up with old Motherwell boss as St Mirren prepare to break the bank

St Mirren are ready to break the bank to sign defender Declan Gallagher on a two-year deal, in a move that would see him link back up with his old Fir Park boss Stephen Robinson.

Aberdeen are believed to have granted the Paisley club permission to talk to Gallagher.

Saints may also be willing to offer the 31-year-old a pay-off to ensure he isn't left out of pocket if he opts to move to the Buddies, according to the Daily Record.

Gallagher worked well with Robinson at Fir Park after joining in 2019, and his performances earned him both the captain's arm band and Scotland cap recognition.

The defender would be one of three former Motherwell stars to sign up at St Mirren this summer, joining goalkeeper Trevor Carson and midfielder Mark O'Hara, with Robinson also signing Keanu Baccus, Ryan Strain and Jonah Ayunga as he builds his squad for next season.

Meanwhile, Aberdeen have agreed to terminate the contract of back-up goalkeeper Gary Woods, who spent three years at Hamilton Accies from 2016 to 2019.
