Aaron Mooy 'considering' Celtic future after Brendan Rodgers arrival as retirement floated by midfielder ally

Veteran Aaron Mooy is reportedly considering his Celtic future with reports suggesting that the Australian midfielder is considering retirement.

The 32-year-old arrived on a free transfer last summer but having spent the last two years of his career playing with Shanghai Port in China he was largely expected to be a squad player. Despite this, he was handed a two-year deal in the Scottish Premiership by Ange Postecoglou - and after a slow start to life at Celtic Park he would play a key part on the Treble-winning success last season.

But a report in Australia suggests Mooy may not play the same part in the Brendan Rodgers era after his former boss left for Tottenham - and could retire before pre-season starts in Glasgow's east end. FTBL state a "well-placed source" has informed them that the midfielder is “thinking things over with a new coach about to take charge”.

Mooy "refused to comment" on if he would see out the final year of his Celtic contract. He declined to join the Socceroos for their 2-0 friendly loss to Argentina in China last week.

Andrew Clark, the former Socceroos head of fitness and conditioning who worked with Mooy before the World Cup in Qatar and Premiership campaign admitted told the outlet he was unsure over his future. He said: “I’m not sure what his intentions are but he makes the game look so easy you’d think retirement might be a long way off yet.

“I’m not inside his head or his body to know exactly how he’s feeling. But I imagine to be back in Glasgow with his wife and kids after all the travelling the globe playing football must be a fantastic feeling.
