AA and RAC say one essential summer item MUST stay in your car this winter

Now winter is well and truly here it is essential we pack the right kit in our cars in preparation for any hazardous conditions the season may bring.

As the weather worsens across Britain, motorists are advised to prepare for any freezing conditions with a winter survival kit.

In line with advice from the UK's motoring breakdown recovery authorities the AA and the RAC, experts at Motor Match have drawn up a list of the essential items every driver needs to carry to stay safe this winter.

One perhaps unusual item both the AA and RAC suggest that is more commonly associated with a stroll along a warm beach than driving through snow is the first item on the list.

While winter isn’t typically associated with sunglasses, the low sun and bright glare from icy roads are serious hazards for drivers.

A spokesperson from used car retailer Motor Match said: "Snow glare or the sun’s angle during winter months can impair visibility. Having sunglasses on hand can significantly reduce glare and improve your focus on the road."

Winter mornings bring frosted windscreens, making an ice scraper and de-icer indispensable. A Motor Match spokesperson said "driving with an icy windscreen is dangerous and illegal." They added: "Failing to clear your view could result in a £1,000 fine and three penalty points."

An effective de-icer reduces the time spent clearing frost, while an ice scraper allows for better visibility in minutes.
