A Wythenshawe man has mysteriously vanished in Ukraine. To his mum, none of it makes sense

The mother of a British man missing in Ukraine has described the last time she spoke to her son as she marks a month since his disappearance.

Daniel Burke, 36, was last seen in the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine - where he had been providing aid and rescuing injured soldiers - four weeks ago.

The former paratrooper, from Wythenshawe, was last seen on Friday August 11 after a fellow volunteer dropped him off at his apartment. He was reported missing by another British volunteer two days later.

Daniel previously served in Afghanistan and fought Islamic State in Syria - seeing him survive sniper attacks, bomb blasts and infection. His family say he is experienced in frontline combat, reconnaissance and rescue - skills which he was utilising in Ukraine.

There has been much speculation about his disappearance, but his mum Diane says her main concern is to ensure the search continues. “I just don’t want my son to be forgotten out there,” she says.

The Foreign Office says it is supporting the family of a British national who has gone missing in Ukraine and is in contact with local authorities in Ukraine. But his mum says she is worried that it will be tougher to find Daniel as time goes on.

She has described the haunting moment a Ukrainian police officer with broken English called her at work and repeated the phrase ‘Daniel Burke is missing’ over and over. “I was absolutely hysterical,” she says. “I couldn’t cope with it.”

The family have been told by Ukrainian police that officers searched Daniel’s Zaporizhzhia apartment and found it empty with no signs of a break-in and the door triple locked.
